Amaryllis Blooming Cycles

Amaryllis flowers are native to South & Central America, which makes them ‘tender’ bulbs. This means that they bloom naturally in warmer seasons, then die back when the weather changes. However, it is quite easy to ‘force’ Amaryllis bulbs to bloom out of season, enabling you to enjoy their beauty during the holidays.

How to Plant Amaryllis Bulbs

Garden State Bulb offers three types of Amaryllis Bulbs in a variety of colors:

Wax Amaryllis Bulb

  • No dirt, no container, no water required!
  • Hand-dipped in wax at our facility, these huge amaryllis bulbs come ready to grow
  • Be sure to rotate ever so often to ensure the stem grows straight and tall

Bare Amaryllis Bulb

  • In Planter:
    • Fill planter ⅔ with moist, well-drained soil
    • Place the Amaryllis bulb in the soil with foots facing down
    • Add additional soil around the bulb, but leave ⅓ of it visible
    • Place the planter in a bright room which remains 65-70°F
    • Keep the soil moist–but not wet
    • Once bloomed, keep out of the direct sunlight to prolong flowers
    • Rotate regularly to even out sun exposure
  • In Ground:
    • Place the Amaryllis bulb in the soil with foots facing down
    • Add additional soil around the bulb, but leave ⅓ of it visible
    • Keep the soil moist–but not wet

Gift Kit Amaryllis Bulb:

  • Rehydrating Coco Peat Disk:
    • Remove plastic wrapper
    • Place the disk in a 2qt container
    • Add 2 cups of warm water
    • Allow the disk to absorb water (15 mins) and expand
    • If necessary, add another ¼ cup of warm water
    • Stir the mixture. Drain excess water if necessary
  • Planting Instructions:
    • Fill ⅔ of the planter with the rehydrated growing medium
    • Place the Amaryllis bulb in the planter with roots facing down
    • Add additional soil around the bulb, but leave ⅓ of it visible
    • Keep the planter in a bright room at a minimum temperature range of 65-70° F
    • Keep the growing medium moist, not wet
    • Keep blooming flowers out of direct sunlight to prolong blossoms

Amaryllis Aftercare

When blooms fade, cut off the tubular flower stems near the top of the bulb, leaving the foliage to continue growing. Water as usual.

If indoors, wait until the danger of frost has passed to place it outdoors in the summer sun. Fertilize every four weeks to help prep the next season of blooms.

Bring your Amaryllis inside after summer and allow the bulb to dry out completely in a cool, dry place. Repot your Amaryllis in fresh soil and start the cycle all over again!

We Wish You a Very Merry Amaryllis!
