Hyacinths are not usually grown as a perennial houseplant, but they are easy to grow indoors if you can tolerate their intense fragrance, which some people find overpowering. Hyacinth bulbs require a dormancy period in order to flower when forced. When growing hyacinths indoors, it is important to remember the bulbs need to be chilled for six to 10 weeks.

How to Grow Hyacinths Indoors

  1. Place the bulbs in a refrigerator for about six to ten weeks before forcing.
  2. After the bulbs have been cooled sufficiently, place them into a special hyacinth vase or put rocks at the bottom of the vase. - These can be found at your local garden center.
  3. Place the bulbs in the vase, pointy side up and root side down
  4. Add water up to the neck of the vase of just below the bulb itself.
  5. Place your hyacinth in the vase.
  6. Next, you'll pour in enough water so that the bottom of the bulb sits just above the water.  It is important to do this, because If the water is touching the bulb it will rot.
  7. The roots will form and grow into the water.
  8. Relocate your hyacinths to a spot in your home that receives bright, indirect light throughout the majority of the day,
  9. After a few weeks, roots will start growing towards the water.
  10. Once they're receiving light in an optimal location, your hyacinths should reach full bloom within two to three weeks.
